Daecheong Lake was developed in 1980 when the Daecheong Dam was completed and has been providing drinking water, living water and industrial water to Daejeon city and Cheongju City since then. It is known for its driving route with small mountains at an altitude of 200-300 meter and beautiful shrubs extending above the lake. It is home of migratory birds and resident birds, and in summer, white herons are easily seen at the upper part of the lake. At the observatory, the visitors can view a magnificent landscape. The Water Promotion hall opened in 1998 has a 3D image hall and an aquarium. There is a lawn square as well. Around Daecheong Lake, there are other tourist attractions such as Geumgang River Park, Gangge Tourist Attraction and Munyi Cultural Site, which makes it easier to coordinate. To get to Daecheong Lake, take Kyungbu Highway and enter the Shintanjin Interchange. At the Shintanjin 4-way crossing, take the road leading to the Daecheong Dam. It takes about 3 hours to drive around the lake.

Walk and meditate at picturesque Lake Daecheong

It is well-known as the location of ‘Cheongnamdae,’ which is a summer house for the president. It has well-preserved clean nature and has become more famous after the recent opening of Cheongnamdae to the public. In December of 1980, a dam was built crossing the main stream of Geumgang between Cheongwon-gun, Choong buk and Shintanjin-dong, Daeduck-gu, Daejeon. The dam blocked a silky wave of 400 km and was named Daecheong Dam because it was built on the boundary of Daejeon and Cheongwon. Daecheong Lake has a total capacity of 1,490,000,000 tonnes of water. It provides living and industrial water to Choongchung region including Daejeon, Cheongju, Chunan and part of the Cheonbuk region including Gunsan. It also provides farming water to the lower stream of Geumgang and Mihochun basin. In addition, it reduces flooding damage at the lower stream of the dam by controlling the flooding level and produces green energy by hydro power generation.

Visitors can hear the sound of rolling water on the quiet road. Stop walking and enjoy the landscape for a while. With a large-Islands at South Sea, the mountain peak in the lake looks like the landscape of a Dadohae (archipelago) on land. The look of people walking and quietly meditating along the decked trail harmonizes with the lake and creates scenery like a watercolor painting. Daecheong Lake is one of the three great lakes of Korea and has a perimeter of 196 km. Of the winding 196 km road, the part that was created in the region passing by Daedeok-gu, Daejeon and Dong-gu is ‘Daecheong Lake Trail.’

 

In contrast to other Olle-gils, an exciting theme to explore, which gives the advantage of a walk that is not excessive. There often are families walking together. Also, each route has a theme making it not boring to explore. The The long extended route is loved by visitors enjoying a quiet walk. As the visitors walk in landscapes of beautiful reed fields along lakes, rivers, mountains, trees, elegant dead trees on the surface, and a mysterious couple of migratory birds visiting the lake, they can feel refreshing wind cooling their sweat. It is a good drive route for both bikes and cars to enjoy a date. The ‘Daisy scent couple road,’ connecting Sikjangsan mountain vicinity to Daecheong Dam is an especially popular dating place for couples.

 

The beautiful Daecheong Lake workshops. The Ecology Park where the Daisy Festival was held is popular as a filming location of a Korean drama called ‘Sad Love Story.’ Among the places, a drive route with a wonderful cherry blossom tunnel is a popular place for proposals from lovers. Also, in summer, blue water of the lake and greens add coolness, and in fall, Daecheong Lake brings contemplation with loneliness from flame grasses. It shows off year-long beauty with a wet fog and snow flowers.

 

There are many tourist attractions in the vicinity, including Munui Cultural Heritage Complex, Daecheong Art Museum, Hyeongam Temple, etc. Every place to stop becomes an educational space and natural ecology school for children.

To get to Daecheong Lake, take Kyungbu Highway and enter the Shintanjin Interchange to take Route 17 leading to Cheongju. At the sign for Daecheong Dam, turn right on Road 32 leading to the Daecheong Dam. It is about 15 km from Shintanjin Interchange to Munui-myun. If you have young children, visitors can enjoy a picnic at Daecheong Dam square with splendid landscape and sculptures.

Daecheong Dam Memorial Tower This tower is located in the square of Daechong Dam. It celebrates the completion of the Daecheong Dam. In addition, the Chieubangyang (稚魚放養) monument and memorial stone (爲業追慕碑) were built in the vicinity. Daecheong Water Promotion Hall : This water promotion hall is located in the observatory area. It provides information on water and dam construction. Hyeongam Temple (懸巖寺) : This temple is located in the mid-slope of Gubongsan Mountaion (old name: Guryongsan, 370.3m) north of Daecheong Dam square. It is called 「hyunsa(懸寺)」 or 「daleumjeol」 which means a temple hanging on the rock cliff. Chuibakjeong Pavilion (翠白亭) : This pavilion, Deajeong City’s 9th Cultural Asset, is located in 188 mihodong. It was built by Jewoldong, Songgyuryem in King Sukjong 27th years (AD 1701) The pavilion is ideal for the education of the young generation.
